MONTPELIER, VT – Today, Pramila Jayapal, chair of the powerful Congressional Progressive Caucus, endorsed State Senator Kesha Ram Hinsdale for Congress. Jayapal is known across Washington for building a new era of progressive power. Jayapal is heralded as “one of the most influential members of Congress,” leading the Medicare for All movement and ensuring that infrastructure bills include progressive priorities, like climate spending and environmental justice. A frequent guest on cable news and Sunday talk shows, Jayapal is the go-to progressive voice in Washington, and her endorsement sends a strong signal across the progressive movement regarding who to back in this congressional race.

“I’ve spent my career building progressive power across this country. So I know firsthand what it takes to lead with vision and passion. Kesha is exactly the kind of fearless progressive leader we need,” said Congresswoman Jayapal. “She’s a fighter and she delivers. She’s consistently been there for labor, for the environment, and for every single justice issue facing America. And I look forward to having the second South Asian American woman in the US House to help me build the bench for even more!”

Both Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal and Senator Kesha Ram Hinsdale understand the intersections of social and economic justice and racial and environmental justice. Both have led tirelessly in this space, advocating when it wasn’t popular and organizing against all odds. Both understand what’s needed and necessary to build a more just, equitable and inclusive America. This endorsement is about one leader recognizing the merits and mettle of another and calling her to Congress.

“Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal has been the backbone of progressive economic policy in this country, from paid family leave and Medicare for All, to infrastructure policy and a Build Back Better agenda that benefits all Americans. I’m deeply honored by this endorsement as I have so much respect for the Congresswoman, for her leadership in Washington and across this country, and for what she’s done for the progressive movement. I look forward to serving alongside her,” said Senator Ram Hinsdale.

Pramila Jayapal’s endorsement adds to the progressive movement already backing Kesha Ram Hinsdale’s campaign for Congress, including the Communications Workers of America – District 1, National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, United Food And Commercial Workers Local 1459, Vermont A.F.L. C.I.O, Sunrise Movement – Middlebury Chapter, Indian American Impact Fund, AAPI Victory Fund, She the People, and Rachel’s Action Network.

Kesha Ram Hinsdale is running for Congress to be Vermont’s fighter in Washington. Born and raised in a working-class family, she has spent her decade-long tenure in the Vermont Legislature fighting for the dignity of working Vermonters. As the daughter of an Indian immigrant father and Jewish American mother, Ram Hinsdale would be the first woman of color elected to represent Vermont in federal office and would be the first Jewish person of color elected to Congress. Upon election to the State House in 2008, she became the youngest state legislator in the country, and she made history in 2020 as the first woman of color elected to Vermont’s State Senate. Ram Hinsdale has an established track record as a leader in the Legislature on environmental, economic and racial justice, and she will bring this leadership to our nation’s capital as Vermont’s first Congresswoman.
